Introduction: RCB vs DC IPL 2026

You watch cricket games. And then there are cricket games that watch you back, pull you in, shake you up, and won’t let you go. The match between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Delhi Capitals at the famous M. Chinnaswamy Stadium today is definitely the second type.

The noise inside Chinnaswamy isn’t just crowd noise; it’s something deep down. It starts at the ground, goes through your chest, and then settles between your heartbeats. IPL does this to your body. This is the effect RCB has on people. Today, the theater was open, the actors were ready, but no one had read the script. No one had read it before.

The Toss That Caused It

The Delhi Capitals chose to bowl first after winning the toss. On paper, it seems like a good idea. The Chinnaswamy pitch frequently has dew at night, which makes pursuing a little bit simpler in the dark. Lungi Ngidi’s raw speed, Mukesh Kumar’s disciplined seam bowling, Axar Patel’s controlled left-arm skill, and Kuldeep Yadav’s enigmatic spin were all part of DC’s bowling assault.
It was a calculated yet dangerous move. DC believed that by preventing RCB from scoring too many runs in the opening innings, they would be able to chase down any goal set on a level field with less ball movement.

They didn’t give Phil Salt much thought.

Phil Salt: The Unexpected Storm

The crowd is curious as some players approach the crease. The audience prepares as Phil Salt approaches the crease.

One of the most thrilling top-order performers in the 2026 Indian Premier League, the English wicketkeeper-batter put on what may have been his greatest performance of the year today. In 38 balls, Salt amassed 63 runs. He did it with timing, instinct, and a confidence that borders on recklessness but never quite is.

He found the line with ease. Three sixes, four fours, and one pull shot from Kuldeep Yadav nearly crossed the second tier. His strike rate of 165.79 tells one tale. The DC fielders’ constant reliance on their skipper for guidance is another example.

Salt’s attack mostly targeted Aquib Nabi, a young, promising pacer for the DC, with 36 runs in three overs and no wickets. 12 per hour. That’s a full-fledged heist, not just expensive. Nabi’s short balls were like personal invitations to knock six, and his bigger deliveries were like half-volleys during a nets session.

However, Salt’s innings involved more than just physical force. He took calculated risks against the top bowlers, struck well with Kohli in the first-wicket stand, and ensured that Chinnaswamy had no opportunity to go silent.

Salt was dismissed for 63 after Kuldeep Yadav got an edge in the eleventh over. The crowd erupted once more after pausing for precisely three seconds. Chinnaswamy functions in this manner. It hurts fast.

Virat Kohli — 19 Runs, But Each and Every One of Those Runs Felt Like 100!

We don’t have to sugar-coat this — when Virat Kohli walks into bat at Chinnaswamy, the scoreboard loses its significance altogether. The crowd doesn’t mind how fast he scores his runs; they are only bothered with the fact that he is at the crease. How he goes about adjusting his gloves, how he taps on the crease, how he eyes the bowlers as if they owe him everything.

In today’s game, Virat scored 19 runs from 13 balls. That includes three boundaries, making the run rate 146.15. This would’ve been considered good for anyone else, but Virat. Media will make discussions about this number next week.

Kohli in addition to Salt amassed 52 runs from just 31 balls as a pair at the top of the order. It is not the end as their aggressive and fast style of batting was excellent too. They seemed to be aware of each other as well and how to capitalize on bad balls.

It was Lungi Ngidi who removed him in the 6th over with an outswing that he got caught behind. He walked back amid applause. This is something about the Chinnaswamy as even when Kohli gets dismissed, it cheers for him. The reason being every time Kohli walks into the crease, he leaves nothing behind.

Devdutt Padikkal – A Brief Appearance Which Should Have Been Lengthened

When Kohli was out, Devdutt Padikkal took his bat and began to play quite confidently. Runs 18 in 13 deliveries – a boundary plus a maximum, batting strike rate – 138.46. He started to settle down in the middle of the pitch, started scoring and was looking forward to forging a stand with Salt.

However, once again Kuldeep Yadav proved to be the spoiler, dismissing Padikkal at the end of the 10th over as he was taken by an excellent fielding position player. This was one delivery which just managed to deceive him – a testimony to Yadav’s craft.

The fall of Padikkal was a severe blow indeed. But it paved way for some other players to make a huge contribution to the team effort.

Rajat Patidar – Small in Stature, Large in Impact

Rajat Patidar is the sort of player who does not require many deliveries to announce his arrival. For Patidar today, it took only four balls – 8 runs, including one six. With a strike rate of 200, he made his presence felt.

Patidar was dismissed by Mukesh Kumar off the 13th delivery, caught on the fence, but not without showcasing why RCB have confidence in him batting in the middle order. Patidar bats cleanly and powerfully, qualities that are often enough for T20 cricket.

Tim David – The Finisher Doing What Finishers Do

While Salt was the storm, Tim David is the lightning following after it.

The power-hitting Singaporean entered the field at number five, seemingly comfortable from the get-go. 14 deliveries, 25 runs without getting out – three fours, one six, strike rate of 178.57. However, apart from the stats, what was more prominent about his performance was the way he handled himself. He was not slog-sweeping the ball. Instead, he was playing proper cricket shots, albeit at an insane pace.

In the 13th over when Mukesh Kumar delivered him a short ball, David had started positioning himself even before the ball left the bowler’s hand. He hit it to the boundary line behind midwicket as if hitting such shots were child’s play.

With some overs left to go, the presence of David in the middle becomes the biggest asset for RCB. Provided that David continues batting for another 3-4 overs, RCB might cross the 210 mark.

DC’s Bowling Performance — Best & Worst

The bowling unit of Delhi Capitals had its share of successes and failures in the match.

Kuldeep Yadav performed exceptionally well today for DC – he bowled three overs, conceded 27 runs, and took one wicket. An economy of 9 by him on this pitch is commendable. He bowled some great balls and dismissed Padikkal with a great disguise ball. He is a player who knows how to make 9-economy rate look like a masterclass performance.

Axar Patel also did decently – he delivered two overs, conceded 16 runs, and took one wicket. He bowled such disciplined lines that RCB batsmen could barely get their hands free from him. Economy rate of 8 for Axar Patel is exceptional on this pitch.

Lungi Ngidi managed to take out the prized wicket of Kohli but he also conceded 19 runs in just two overs. When Lungi Ngidi is on the day, he is among the fastest bowlers of the league. Today wasn’t such a case for him.

Mukesh Kumar was the most economical bowler for Delhi Capitals – he bowled three and a half overs, conceded 29 runs, took one wicket, and kept an economy rate of 7.91.

The T. Natarajan over cost his side a massive 14 runs with an economy of 14, which is pretty high for any death bowler. That particular over really dented the overall plans of RCB, which had been working out very well till then.

Then there is Aquib Nabi, who would have definitely loved to forget the first three overs of his spell. 36 runs and no wicket? With all due respect, he is not even worth talking about. Salt exposed all his weaknesses today.

What’s Next for This Match?

With RCB already boasting a score of 142/4 in 14.3 overs and with a run rate of 9.75, the equation is pretty clear. If they can manage to cross the 200-215 mark, they would put Delhi Capitals in a spot of bother. DC has a lot of match-winning players like Rishabh Pant and others. However, their batting order will have to be on point on the Chinnaswamy stadium under lights against the RCB bowlers.

This match is far from over. No way! But currently, the advantage is on the side of RCB, and the atmosphere inside Chinnaswamy stadium is electrifying.

Final Word — For a Reason It’s More Than Cricket

There is always that one game in every IPL season that stays unforgettable for many years. There is always that one game that fans talk to their children about. I truly feel today’s RCB vs DC game could well be that game for IPL 2026.

Phil Salt proved why he deserves to be one of the best openers in international cricket. Virat Kohli proved why Chinnaswamy Stadium would forever remain his home ground. Tim David proved why it is only the finisher who wins. And DC proved there’s more to the team than what meets the eye.

The evening is far from over. Second Innings is still due. And then Chinnaswamy? The stadium is just getting into gear.
